According to David, Adir was stationed at an Israeli military outpost close to the Gaza border on October 7. Adir was slain by Hamas fighters who attacked the post. Following this, Adir's head was severed by Hamas members, who then said that it would be auctioned off for $10,000.

David claimed to have discovered Adir's remains in the national cemetery of Israel. "My son's body was mutilated," he declared. He was in such terrible shape that it was hard to identify him." A DNA test was used to identify the corpse. David stated that he spent two months going door to door in an attempt to find Adir's head, but he was unsuccessful. However, in December, he learned that the Israeli security agency had discovered his son's head, which had been kidnapped by terrorists. In a freezer, it was stored.

According to David, "As soon as I found my son's head, I felt relieved that even though a lot had gone wrong with Adir, I could finally bury him completely."
