NEW DELHI: Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and the leader of the Trinamool Congress, said on Thursday that she strongly disagrees with the idea of holding "one nation-one election" and questions the meaning of "one-nation" in this particular context. Mamata claimed the letter from the high-level committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, to the states represented a unilateral, top-down 'decision' already made by the Central Government to impose a structure that is unquestionably in opposition to the spirit of a truly federal and democratic one, as outlined by the highly regarded Indian Constitution.Mamata wrote a strongly worded letter pleading with the panel not to cherry-pick findings and reform suggestions and show off a few useful reports that are readily available to the public to support the idea.
