Former Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that Nawaz Sharif would take over as prime minister if the PML-N wins a majority in the polls. Should there be a divided mandate, coalition partners would be consulted before a decision was made.

One day prior to the vote, Shehbaz, who is also the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), made these remarks in an interview with Geo News. Who would be the future prime minister, he was asked? "If we secure a simple majority, Wawz Sharif will serve as prime minister. However, the choice about a split mandate will be decided following discussions with coalition allies, he stated.

Shehbaz was also asked if he would rather take over as prime minister rather than giving his brother the position, as he might not be able to carry it out well given his advanced age and health problems. "I'll respond to this question the same way I've responded to dictators on several occasions: Nawaz Sharif is my prime minister and leader," he declared.

Shehbaz has previously disclosed in many interviews that he was often offered the chance to succeed his brother as prime minister by the influential establishment, but he consistently turned down the offer. It's possible that Shehbaz made the offer since he has always had positive relations with the establishment.

Shehbaz led the coalition government comprising over twelve parties that was formed following Imran Khan's ouster in April 2022. He governed with ease and maintained the coalition for 16 months, until the parliament's tenure ended in August.

Over 650,000 guards have been stationed around the country in anticipation of the elections, which get underway at 8:00 am today and run nonstop until 5:00 pm. A national holiday has been announced to allow voters to cast ballots without any obstacles.
